The Conversion of Juno MacGuff

The video clip above is an extract of the film Juno (2007). This could be said the “conversion” of Juno, a pregnant 16-year-old. Like other pregnant teens, Juno decided to perform an abortion. On her way to Women Now, she met her schoolmate, Su-Chin, who told her that the baby “may have fingernails”. Inside the clinic, the noises made by people around caused Juno feeling uncomfortable as she kept thinking what Su-Chin had said. She then left the clinic and decided to keep the infant.

This conversion is a 180-degree change. Her decision changed from getting abortion into against it, from being an irresponsible and aimless teenager into a conscientious and considerable “adult”. She understood that it was wrong to intercourse at that young age since she was still in high school and did not have the ability and time to take care of a baby. Despite that, being reminded by Su-Chin, she realised that the infant was also a life, so she decided not to abort the baby started searching for adopters for it.

This change led the story forward as she actively and constructively thought of what to do next, such as how to break the news to her dad and where to find the adopters. If she decided to abort, the story may have ended with nothing happened, at a situation exactly the same with the beginning of the story. Only with this sequence, the story could go on with the narration of Juno’s grow up throughout the year and becoming more mature.
