"Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." Hundreds of Christians demonstrates persistence in traditional marriage

[SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA] More than 300 Christians gathered at Sydney landmark Martin Place in the afternoon yesterday, Sunday the 20th of September, following a march from Belmore Park. Participants reaffirmed their stance on same-gender marriage - a teardown of the fabric of human society.

Several prominent church and community leaders spoke to the crowd at Martin Place, including His Grace Bishop Daniel of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Sydney, Rabbi Paul Lewin from the Rabbinical Council of NSW, the Australian Indigenous Christian Ministries' Pastor Peter Walker, Phillip Hobby from the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints, representatives of the Presbyterian and the Assyrian churches. Statements from the Catholic and the Anglican churches were also read out, together with an uplifting statement from Joe de Bruyn, National President of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association.

Speeches made references to the sacred texts, which were written more than 2000 years ago, from, specifically, the Book of Genesis, the Gospel of St. Mark, and the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans. "The Bible is very clear about the teaching of how human beings should live a holy life - holy life, I repeat," said Bishop Daniel from the Orthodox Church.

"Every child has a biological mother and father. But the importance of mothers and fathers goes far beyond reproduction," the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference stressed, "marriage is the covenant of a man and a woman to live as husband and wife, exclusively and for life, and open to the procreation of children."

The speeches were concluded with the hymns Amazing Grace and God Bless Australia, collaboratively performed by vocalist Esther King and the Redeemer Baptist Musical Team. Prior to the closing of the rally, Rev. Dr. Ross Clifford, President, NSW Council of Churches, led an ending prayer, highlighting the significance of Christian unity in this critical time, as members of the crowd held hands together.
